CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Eugene and Agatha’s RV wasn’t fixed yet, I learned when I called them. We had already eaten our early dinner, but I invited them to join us out at the lake. Arriving just prior to sunset, they set their chairs out by us and we enjoyed watching the calm lake and all its wildlife. It was very quiet, hardly any other campers around. Shadow immediately planted herself at Eugene’s feet and then stared up at him with adoration.

We told them all about our Bryce Canyon hike. They had driven their truck over to Cedar City for the day to visit with their relatives and hoped by the time they got back that their RV would be ready.

JJ sat closest to Eugene and was engaged in conversation with him. Alexis, Greg, and I got an earful from Agatha.

“The cousins were sure of it!” Agatha exclaimed when telling us about asking them whether Eugene had children with his wife.

“You mean, they were certain he did not have children with his first wife?” I clarified.

“Yep, that’s what I said.”

Greg was puzzled. “I don’t understand why Todd was so adamant about it then. How would he know anyway? It’s not as though he was ever close to the guy.”

Agatha just shook her head. “He’s sketchy.” She pulled her toothpick out of her shirt pocket and started picking her teeth.

I nodded my head in agreement. I felt bad he got hurt, but yes, something was very sketchy about that guy. What was he up to?

JJ shouted over to us to get our attention. “Hey guys, he and his first wife lived in Wyoming—next door to her parents!” He smiled, then dived back into Eugene’s story.

Greg and I looked at each other, confused. Alexis quietly explained to Greg. “I think he wants to believe that Eugene is related … grandfather or something? He’s been spending each evening on Ancestry.com doing research.”

“Really?” he asked. “I mean, looking at them side by side, they’re both tall and lean in stature. Both have crystal blue eyes. By the looks of Eugene’s fine white hair, I assume he was also blonde in his youth. And, their fair skin … physically, I could see them being related. But, that’s just silly. Isn’t it?” I laughed it off.

“I’m not sure what’s going on with him lately. He has gotten on this kick about needing to know where he comes from. He never knew his mother so there are a lot of questions swirling around in that brain.”

Greg asked, “Couldn’t he ask his father?”

“I don’t know. He’s not very open about that time in his life. I get the feeling that once he met Heather, he erased everything else. Almost as though the family unit—JJ, Rene, Heather, and him—were the only family of his.”

Agatha changed subject abruptly. “Where are you guys headed next? You check out of here tomorrow, right?”

I looked to Alexis to make sure she was finished talking first, and when she waved me on, I answered Agatha. “Well, we were going to discuss that tonight.
